Speaker

Kat (Katharine Gronow) is mother of 3 and a teacher. Born, raised and always lived in the Western suburbs of Melbourne, Kat has worked in early learning centres, kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, special schools, VET and University as well as her own community education business. At 7-years old (in the 1980s), Kat was introduced to Auslan at school in an attempt to accommodate for a hard-of-hearing (HoH) child, but did not learn about Deaf culture until early adulthood where she commenced a community Auslan course. This lead to a major in Auslan at National Institute for Deaf Studies (NIDS) at La Trobe University and she recently completed her Diploma in Auslan at Melbourne Polytechnic (MPT). Kat has volunteered at Furlong Park for the Deaf and Melbourne Deaflympics, worked at Victorian College for the Deaf and played with the Melbourne Deaf Cricket Club. Currently as part of her role as an academic at Victoria University, Kat is researching Auslan access for Deaf children from hearing families in Australia.
